We encourage you to limit your luggage to one suitcase which we will courier from Sarria to Compostela while we are walking. For the WALKING portion of the pilgrimage (6 days), you are invited to bring only what you can fit into a 35L backpack. Pack for 3 days and plan on wearing your items more than once. We will be providing you with a recommended packing list once you commit to the journey.
We will walk about 75 miles and walk between 8 miles and 13 miles every day. Every evening, you will receive the next day's route at our evening gathering.
13 miles is rather intimidating, and it really is a lot. It's normal to doubt ourselves when we are embarking in something we've never done before. We encourage all our pilgrims to train and gradually increase your milage to be able to walk 10 miles. If you can walk 10 miles, you can walk 13! If you feel the call to pilgrimage, trust that your body can do this. Our bodies are made to walk. AND, it's important to listen to your body. We have a backup plan in case you are not able to complete the day's mileage. We have a list of pilgrim taxi services that will transport you to our next albergue (at your expense).
Curious about how to train? Check out this link: Training Guide
Good news! Yes, we WILL be walking 3-5 miles every day along the Camino route from Madrid to Sarria. These first four days allow us to get adjusted to the Central European Time zone (8 hour difference from Colorado), get over any travel fatigue, and get our legs ready for the longer walking days ahead.
Additionally, since we are flying into Madrid, we are taking advantage of stopping the wonderful and historical cities of Avila, Segovia, Valladolid, and Astorga. At each town, we will have time for reflection and journaling, and connect with the PLACE, a WOMAN's STORY, and deepen into our own INTENTION for the journey.
We will only be spending about 2.5 hours on the bus each day as we wind our way through the Castilian countryside to get to Sarria where we begin the walking portion of the pilgrimage along the Camino Frances (French Route).
We will be staying in lovely, modest, comfortable and historic "albergues" or hotels. The quoted cost is for DOUBLE OCCUPANCY and en-suite bathroom. Your roommate(s) will become a life-long friend. Due to the configuration of some of our albergues, we will sometimes have triple rooms or family-style suites/apartments. Breakfast and dinner are included in the price. You will need to purchase your own lunch, beverages, and snacks.
Here is where we will be staying:
Day 1: Avila-Palacio Valderrabanos
Day 2: Tordesillas-Hotel Doña Carmen
Day 3: Astorga-Exe Astur Plaza
Day 4: Sarria-La Casona de Sarria
Day 5: Portomarin-Portomarin Star
Day 6: Lestedo-Rectoral de Lestedo
Day 7: Melide (O Loboreiro)-Casa dos Somoza
Day 8: Ribadiso- Pension Ribadiso
Day 9: O Acivro (O Pino)-Hotel Rural O Acivro
Day 10 & 11: Santiago de Compostela-A Fonte das Hortas
There is an additional fee of $800 for a single room. Single rooms are limited in availability and only for those with medical or other personal reasons that require a private room.
Most restaurants are aware of allergies and intolerances and you can usually find/request something that will suit your preferences. However, if you have a very restricted diet or are concerned with cross-contamination as with celiacs, it is recommended that you bring your own food. We will be walking through small towns and grocery stores if you need to make purchases.
You will only need a 30L-45L pack for the Camino. Your pack should weigh between 10% and 20% of your body weight. (ie, 10% of 130 lbs=13 lbs or 20% of 130 lbs = 26 lbs). While training, you should steadily increase its weight until you are carrying the same load you will carry on the Camino. It's best to train with the pack you will use so you are accustomed to how it rides on your back and how it can be adjusted to distribute the load. If you are unfamiliar with how to adjust or fit your pack, we suggest you go to REI or other outdoor gear store for adjustments.
You will need a very limited wardrobe on the Camino. Train wearing what you want to bring so you know it will perform well. Shirt, pants, underwear, socks, hat, sunglasses—wear every item on your long training walks. Practice hand-washing and air drying these clothes between walking days. Then you will know how much you may need to use laundry service on the Camino. There is access to washers and dryers at some albergues (hotels) along the Camino. We will supply you with a packing list.
Most Camino walkers use trekking poles. Poles can help take pressure off the knees, especially on hills, and they help with balance on rocky terrain. Use them on your training walks, especially for hills and on natural trails. Learn how to use them and carry them. Purchase removable rubber, non-slip tips if your poles have metal tips. If you are bringing poles, you will need to check your luggage. If you wish to avoid checked baggage fees, it may be cheaper to buy poles when you arrive in Europe.
It is important to train for the Camino. It is NOT a walk in the park! Check out our training guide here:
Temperatures cool to 18°C (64°F) in May As the temperatures begin to warm, there is also a higher chance of rain along the route. Bring raingear!
We will be walking about 12-13 miles every day. We recommend you walk at least a 30-35 min mile pace (including rest breaks). At a 30-35 min mile pace, it will take about 8 hours to complete your day with breaks. We usually leave the albergue by 9 am and arrive at our next albergue by 5 pm.
We encourage you to walk the Camino as you feel led to walk. Sinde this is a deeply personal, devotional experience, there may be days that you feel led to walk in solo contemplation and days you long to walk in community. How you choose to walk depends on what you need that day or even that moment. Sometimes we need to move fast, sometimes we desire to take it slow. We give each other the grace and space to weave in and out and express our needs for that day. We will leave together by 9 am and we just ask that you arrive at our next albergue by 5 pm.
Yes! Our policy is designed to ensure the wellbeing of the whole group. Our policy is informed by the latest CDC guidelines. Here is our COVID 19 and Upper Respiratory Virus policy:
COVID 19 AND UPPER RESPIRATORY VIRUS POLICY:
-While we encourage COVID 19 vaccination and boosters, this is no longer a requirement for entry into Spain and therefore not a requirement of travel. Check with your airline for their requirements.
-If you have symptoms that include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others, that cannot be explained by any other cause, assume you have an upper respiratory viral infection and are contagious.
-If you have had the above symptoms, we require that you be symptom-free and are fever-free for at least 1 week (seven days) prior to our trip. We will be traveling in close proximity to the other pilgrims and can't guarantee the recommended social distancing during the five-day recommended precautionary period.
-If you become sick during our trip, we will take the following steps: require mask wearing and social distancing, monitor fever and symptoms, take you to a local health center for diagnosis and treatment as appropriate (at your expense), and take appropriate next steps depending on illness. This may include social distancing and isolation until you are symptom-free and fever-free for 24 hours with the additional five days of added precautions. This may mean trip interruption.
-Purchase trip insurance that covers illness to ensure your trip expenses are covered in case you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to illness.
INJURY AND ILLNESS POLICY: In the event that you get injured and/or become ill and your injury or illness prevents further participation in the pilgrimage, we will take you to the nearest health center for diagnosis and treatment and assist you to make plans for your care. This will be at your expense. It is highly recommended that you purchase trip insurance to support unexpected expenses due to injury and/or illness.
In 2023, 60,332 pilgrims were on the Camino in May. May is a beautiful time to travel and it is Springtime! Flowers blooming! Lovely mild temperatures in the high 60's.
